What is Discovery?
Hands On Atlanta’s Discovery program is a volunteer-led tutoring/enrichment program for students Pre-K through 5th grade. Students are grouped by grade level and participate in fun and educational activities while interacting closely with volunteers. The goal is to provide as close to one-on-one support as possible. When and where is Discovery held?
Discovery is held two or three Saturdays per month from 10AM-noon at elementary schools throughout the Atlanta area. Check the website for exact dates. How much does Discovery cost?
Discovery is free of charge for students! The only charge for schools is any custodial fees incurred from opening the building. What does Hands On Atlanta provide?
Hands On Atlanta provides volunteer recruitment services as well as programming and curriculum support. In addition, Hands On Atlanta provides a free snack for students. What are the benefits of Discovery?
The Discovery program is an excellent opportunity for students to have a safe, fun, and educational experience that supports or enhances existing instruction.
How is Discovery Structured?
Two or three times a month on a Saturday morning, tutoring sessions are held for students. One or two volunteer School Captains supervise the program at the school. School Captains may either come from the community or the school itself. They are responsible for developing relationships with the school staff and managing other volunteer leaders. In each grade, 1-2 volunteer leaders are trained to act as Grade Captains. Grade Captain responsibilites include providing the lesson plan for the tutorial session, engaging volunteers and students in an activity that is both educational and interesting. Ideally, a one-to-one student to volunteer ratio is maintained.
Hands On Atlanta takes an unconvential approach by allowing volunteers total flexibility in seeking their own level of involvement. No experience is needed for tutoring. Volunteers can make a commitment to a particular grade or they can provide assistance in a classroom with low volunteer attendance. While the program offers an excellent opportunity for the first time volunteer, the Project Coordinators and Grade Captains work hard to build a team of dedicated volunteers at their school. |
