Grade Captains

The Role of a Grade Captain:

The Grade Captain's role is to make the Discovery session as beneficial as possible for both students and volunteers.

Being a Grade Captain is a commitment for the school year. We try to have two or three for each grade to share the responsibilities. In the past, some Grade Captains have alternated weeks.

Grade Captains are generally responsible for these areas of the Discovery Program:

*Planning the activities for each Discovery session. Your lessons should engage volunteers directly as much as possible.
*Arriving at the school no later than 9:30 AM to allow time to set up your classroom and greet/monitor your students as they arrive in the cafeteria.
*Assuring that your class has adequate supplies, e.g. pencils, rulers, paper, etc. and materials for each session.
*Being aware of the students' abilities so that you are able to determine which children need more help and/or attention and in which academic areas.
*Helping to foster a core group of "regular" volunteers for your grade.
*Maintaining discipline in the classroom sufficient to allow for a suitable learning environment.
*Thanking your volunteers!
*Ensuring that your classroom is left clean and tidy, in the same fashion you found it.
*Assisting with field trips.
*Informing the School Captain as far in advance as possible when you will not be able to attend a session.

Volunteer Assistant Grade Captain Job Description:
*Commit to being at the majority of the sessions
*Helping the Grade Captain carry out the lessons
*Fill in if the Grade Captain has to miss a session

Becoming a Grade Captain or Assistant Grade Captain:

You must attend a Grade Captain Training at Hands On Atlanta. Please contact a Discovery Program Coordinator to find out more information or to schedule a training. We always have openings at every school in every grade for Grade Captains and Assistant Grade Captains.
